When the sun sets and the sky goes dark
The tours time their start to the sunset, so the start moves through the year and the order of the evening does not: the Pinnacles in the last light, dinner, then the stars. Autopia Tours’ coach leaves at 1:30 PM on 14 November 2026 and at 2:00 PM on 8 December 2026 and 12 January 2027.

Western Australian time (UTC+8, no daylight saving), computed for the Pinnacles by the method that reproduces Perth Observatory’s published Perth tables to the minute; the Pinnacles differ from Perth by up to three minutes from November to February and run up to seven minutes later from April to August. “Fully dark” is the end of astronomical twilight.
The sky is fully dark 80 to 100 minutes after sunset, so on a December evening the stargazing part of a tour starts late. The moon matters more than the month: the new moons fall on 9 December 2026, 8 January 2027 and 6 February 2027, and the full moons on 24 November and 24 December 2026 and 22 January 2027 (Perth Observatory). The best nights for stargazing has every month and every moon to October 2027.
Where the evening happens

The Pinnacles are thousands of limestone pillars, up to about 4 m tall in the Parks and Wildlife Service’s visitor guide, standing in yellow sand in Nambung National Park, 189 km by road from Perth city centre. Yued people are the Traditional Owners of the park. The Parks and Wildlife Service asks visitors not to climb, sit or stand on the pillars, which can be unstable.
The tours drive up the coast in the afternoon. Autopia Tours stops at Guilderton Lookout over the Moore River and the dunes, then Nilgen Nature Reserve when the wildflowers are out or Hangover Bay. Lumineer Adventure Tours stops at Lancelin for sandboarding. Australian Pinnacle Tours' evening stops at Yanchep National Park for koalas and kangaroos.
If you drive yourself, entry to the park is A$17 a vehicle with up to 12 people (Parks and Wildlife Service, checked November 2026). On the tours, Autopia Tours, Lumineer Adventure Tours and Tour2Holiday list national park admission in the price.
The telescope and the sky
On a clear night the Southern Cross, the two Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way are all over the Pinnacles at some point in the year, and at 21:00 on 9 December 2026 Saturn stands high in the north-west. What you can see from the Pinnacles has computed star charts for December, April and July.
Autopia Tours brings a telescope, weather permitting, and its guide talks through the constellations and Aboriginal stories of the night sky. Guests who wrote in September 2026 saw the Moon and Venus through it. Lumineer Adventure Tours brings telescopes and astro binoculars, and several of its guests saw Saturn’s rings. Australian Pinnacle Tours' evening includes afternoon tea and dinner but no telescope, and is “a relaxed sightseeing tour rather than a professional astronomy-based expedition”. Is the stargazing any good? sets out what each tour brings and what disappointed some guests.
Dinner
Each tour feeds you differently: Autopia Tours serves a picnic dinner with a glass of sparkling wine after sunset; Lumineer Adventure Tours cooks a BBQ and pours a glass of wine; Australian Pinnacle Tours seats you in a tavern in Cervantes; Tour2Holiday serves a picnic with Aussie wine. None includes lunch, and the tours leave around midday or in the early afternoon, so eat before you go. Dinner under the stars compares the four.
When cloud comes over
Of the tours compared here, only one carries a Stargazing Refund in its terms. Lumineer Adventure Tours gives a guaranteed refund if weather or conditions prevent or critically impact the experience. Australian Pinnacle Tours may cancel on a very unfavourable forecast and offer a full refund or another date. Autopia Tours uses its telescope when the weather permits and cancels free until 24 hours before. Cloudy nights has each tour’s terms and what guests did on cloudy evenings.
What the price buys
Autopia Tours’ price covers the air-conditioned mini-coach from selected Perth inner-city points (the tour starts and ends at the Criterion Hotel Perth), the driver guide and commentary, national park admission, the guided walk at the Pinnacles, the picnic dinner with a glass of wine, the telescope and a translation app in several languages. For the sunset, a meal and the stars in one booking, it is the tour to book.
See dates for the sunset and stargazing tour
The same evening sells on Viator as Pinnacles Sunset Stargazing Dinner Experience Small Group Tour for US$139 (checked November 2026), and Lumineer Adventure Tours’ sells there as Pinnacles Desert Sunset Dinner and Stargazing Tour for US$154. Australian Pinnacle Tours' evening is on Viator as Pinnacle Desert Sunset and Night-time Stargazing Tour from Perth. The operators price in Australian dollars, so what you pay in US dollars depends on the day’s conversion.
