What Should You Wear for Stargazing at the Pinnacles?

What to wear and bring on a Pinnacles sunset and stargazing tour: sun gear for the sunset walk, warm layers for after dark, shoes for sand, and the bag limits.

Updated November 2026

Dress for two parts of one evening: a sun hat, sunscreen and closed walking shoes for the sunset walk on sand, then a warm layer, a jacket and long trousers for the hours after dark. Autopia Tours and Lumineer Adventure Tours both put warm clothing on their lists of things to bring, and guests who wrote in May, July and August 2026 found it cold once the sun went down. Autopia Tours’ From Perth: Pinnacles Sunset and Stargazing Tour with Dinner is US$137 a person (checked November 2026).

How cold it gets

It depends on the month. A guest on Autopia Tours’ evening in May 2026 asked anyone going “in May or June and staying there until evening” to “bring a warm jacket or a hoodie”. Lumineer Adventure Tours' guests in July and August 2026 wrote that “it gets surprisingly cold once the sun goes down” and to bring “hand warmer or thicker jackets”.

Earlier and later in the year it is milder. A guest on Autopia Tours’ evening in March 2026 “did not find it cold at all” but advised “a light layer for after dark”, and one of Lumineer Adventure Tours' guests in November 2025 wrote simply “it wasn’t cold”. The Parks and Wildlife Service describes December to March as usually hot and dry, with an afternoon sea breeze. So in any month, pack one warm layer; from May to August, pack a proper jacket as well.

For the sunset walk

  • Shoes. Closed, comfortable shoes for sand. Autopia Tours’ walks at the Pinnacles are 1 to 2 km and need moderate fitness, and high heels are not allowed on it or on Lumineer Adventure Tours' day.
  • Sun. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen: the tours reach the park in the late afternoon sun. A hat and sunglasses for the day are on Lumineer Adventure Tours' list.
  • Water. Bring a full bottle. A reusable water bottle is on Autopia Tours’ list; bring it full, because a guest in March 2026 found nowhere to refill it at the Pinnacles.
  • Rain gear in the wetter months. Autopia Tours’ list includes rain gear; most of the park’s rain falls between May and September (Parks and Wildlife Service).

What to leave behind

The coaches have little room. Autopia Tours limits baggage to a 1 to 5 kg bag a guest and does not allow large bags; Lumineer Adventure Tours has no luggage space at all and does not allow luggage or large bags. Leave suitcases at your hotel.

For the daytime side of a Pinnacles trip, with the heat, the fire-danger season and water in more depth, pinnaclesdeserttour.com has a guide to the desert by day.

Packed and ready? Autopia Tours’ evening gives you the sunset walk, a picnic dinner and the telescope in one trip.
